Elks as a place to hang out and we hope to see you around the
club. As always, we are willing to listen to your suggestions
on other activities.
Finally, on
Sept. 11
there will be a parade starting on Leonard just West of Covell
and ending on the front lawn of the Elks. The parade starts at
11 am. The purpose of parade and get together on the lawn
afterwards is to promote the West side as the best place to live
in Grand Rapids. It will feature marching bands, a remembrance
of 9/11, police honor guards, etc. Hot dogs will be provided.
This is not an Elk sponsored event, however the sponsors are
great supports of the Elks and have encouraged us to participate
and use this opportunity to highlight our many charitable
activities as well as promoting membership. Hope to see you
there!!
Fraternally yours, Steve Kosten, PER

VETERANS UPDATE:
On July 31 Bill Mesery, Dave Stratton, Shirley Cloud, Dave and
Diane Dusendang were honored to help serve our Veterans and
their families at the annual Veterans Family Picnic held at the
Veterans Home. For many years, Elks 48 has participated in this
event, serving up ice cream for the rootbeer floats and this
year was no exception!
The Veterans enjoyed food, games, entertainment, visiting and
laughing on a beautiful sunny Saturday.
Our own Bill Mesery also hosted the kids from Re-Creation (a
non-denominational singing group that travels across the country
entertaining in Veterans Homes for a year) for pizza and bowling
after the picnic in the Lodge. Many thanks to Sue Murtland for
her help in hosting duties.
If you ever have a chance to sign up for this event - or any
event with Bill or the Veterans, please do so - you’ll be so
glad you did!!

FAMILY PICNIC RECAP:
Well another year, another picnic! Thank you to all the many,
terrific volunteers and members who came out to the picnic. We
were blessed with a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed great
food, relays and games, a visit from the GR Fire Department,
dunk tank, 50/50, the grand prize give-a-way of a boys and a
girls bike, and so much more.
This free event is just another benefit of being an Elk - flat
out fun and camaraderie with your fellow Elks.
My heartfelt thanks to those of you who took the time out of
your busy schedules to help make this picnic a huge success,
whether donating items, setting up, cleaning up, working, grill
or just participating.
If you would like to help plan the 2011 Family Picnic - please
let me know! We’re always on the lookout for folks that want to
have fun and who have great ideas!!
